Coastal rules and national parks in outline

HR-GUIDE-M5 · Practical · HR-GUIDE-M5-A Coastal rules and parks in outline, emergency numbers and where to train.

The coastal rules a yacht crew trips over most: **8 kn within 300 m, distances off by length, beaches, 70 m lines ashore**, the 1,000 GT channels and park access.

Legal frame Pravilnik o sigurnosti pomorske plovidbe NN 52/25, arts 49–53 and 56–67, as amended by NN 40/26 (in force 25 Apr 2026); park internal rules and 2026 price lists (Kornati, Mljet, Brijuni, Lastovo, Telašćica).

Distances and speed

Rule Under 15 m 15–30 m 30 m and over
Minimum distance from the coast 50 m 150 m 300 m
Minimum distance from a buoyed beach line 50 m 100 m 300 m
Speed within 300 m of the coast, in narrow channels, on harbour and anchorage approaches 8 kn 8 kn 8 kn

You may come closer only to enter or leave port, to anchor or to berth, and then at reduced speed. Motor craft and jet skis plane only beyond 300 m. Keep 50 m from a diver's flag. Harbour masters can set tighter local limits, published on charts and the Ministry site. A police leaflet still quotes 5 kn within 150 m; that reflects the repealed 2013 rules. Inside NP Mljet, however, the park's own 5 kn within 150 m applies.

Anchoring and lines ashore

  • Anchoring is banned where charted or ordered by the harbour master, over cables and outfalls, with the swinging circle within 50 m of a buoyed beach, and within 150 m of a natural beach.
  • Since NN 40/26, no part of the vessel or its gear may be 70 m or more from the shore (previously 50 m). Never tie to trees or shrubs.
  • Natural anchorages are free. Nautical anchorages are buoyed concessions that charge and collect waste.

Channels for large yachts

For yachts of 1,000 GT or more, NN 52/25 as amended:

  • Fažanski kanal, Tihi kanal: coastal pilot required;
  • Sedmovraće, Srednji kanal, Murter sea / Žirje / Vrgada channels, Pašmanski tjesnac: barred unless piloted (Pašman: 8 kn in the lanes);
  • Pakleni kanal: barred except to enter the Hvar anchorage or port; no anchoring within 0.6 nm of Galešnik;
  • Krka estuary to Skradin: pilot required, 8 kn, no anchoring in the Sv. Ante and Skradin channels.

Mali Ždrelac and the Sv. Ante channel have their own reporting rules for vessels of 15 m and 20 m. Mala Vrata near Dubrovnik is closed to craft over 20 m.

Parks in one table

Park Key rule for yachts

TIP — Brief the guests too Tenders and toys are bound by the same 300 m, 8 kn and 50 m rules. Most fines start with a tender. More in Anchoring in Italy and Bareboat Chartering in Croatia.
