Into yachting
Governing: SAMSA MIN 10-25; MCA MSN 1867 (M) Amendment 1; MSN 1815 (M+F) Amendment 7. Builds on: L4.1, L4.2.
South Africans are everywhere in superyachting, and most of them built their careers on MCA and RYA tickets taken at SA training schools. Where does a SAMSA STCW certificate fit? This lesson pulls the course together into practical routes.
Three common starting points
| You hold | Typical move into yachts |
|---|---|
| SAMSA OS/AB or STCW short courses only | Start as deckhand; build yacht service; take MCA yacht rating and OOW route (Yacht Rating Certificate, OOW/Master yacht CoCs) |
| SAMSA unlimited OOW or Chief Mate (ex-cadet) | Obtain a flag endorsement (UK FSE, or another flag accepting SA certificates) and join as a watchkeeper or mate; many later add MCA yacht CoCs for flexibility |
| SAMSA near-coastal or port operations ticket | Useful at home; abroad it is limited or not STCW. Build MCA yacht tickets for international work |
Engineers follow the same logic: a SAMSA EOOW or Second Engineer can be endorsed like a deck CoC; small-power and legacy Motorman tickets rarely travel. See MCA engineering (AEC, SV route).
The flag decides
Your certificate needs recognising by the flag of the yacht, not by the agency.
- UK and Red Ensign practice: South Africa is on the MCA's FSE list (Lesson 4.1).
- Marshall Islands: MIN 10-25 records that it accepts SA certificates; confirm the process with the flag.
- Cayman, Malta: not in MIN 10-25. Ask the flag before assuming.
Medicals
A SAMSA medical is accepted on UK ships under MSN 1815 Amendment 7 (August 2026), but the notice is explicit that it does not allow those doctors to issue an ENG1. In practice many yacht employers and agencies specify ENG1 by name. Carry a valid SAMSA medical for SA work and an ENG1 for the international market if you can. See ENG1 guide.
STCW short courses
For service on UK ships, MSN 1867 says port state control will expect evidence of completing or updating PST, survival craft and rescue boats, fast rescue boats (if held), fire prevention and firefighting and advanced firefighting within the last 5 years. SAMSA-accredited and MCA-approved versions of these courses both exist in South Africa; check which one the yacht's flag and management company want. See Basic Safety and STCW refresher.
Working at home between seasons
Plenty of SA crew come home for the southern summer. Charter boats in Cape Town, dive boats in Durban, and tenders and launches in Knysna are usually small commercial vessels under the small vessel regime, where a SAMSA skipper certificate, not an MCA one, is what the operator and SAMSA surveyor will ask for. See SAMSA Skipper Categories R–B, SAMSA Commercial Endorsements and Superyachts in South African Waters.
A practical checklist
- Keep your SAMSA CoC revalidated: five-yearly, apply up to six months early.
- Keep the SAMSA medical and an ENG1 current if you work both markets.
- Log yacht service in both SAMSA and MCA formats, with steaming, anchor and alongside days.
- Before accepting a job, check flag recognition of your certificate and the vessel's GT and kW against your limits.
- Check the current MIN on recognition and the MCA FSE list before applying; both change.
