Worked timeline
Example: Master (Yachts) 3000 GT, CoC expires 31 October 2027, yacht Cayman-flagged, last STCW refreshers completed September 2022, ENG1 expires 15 June 2027, also holds an endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore expiring March 2028.
| When | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| April 2026 (18 months out) | Audit: CoC, refreshers, ENG1, GMDSS, ECDIS, Medical Care, flag endorsements, commercial endorsement. Write the expiry list | Nothing surprises you |
| Winter 2026-27 | Book and complete PST, FPFF, PSCRB and AFF refreshers (with onboard self-declarations to shorten PST, PSCRB and AFF) | 2022 refreshers lapse in September 2027, before the CoC does |
| Winter 2026-27 | Check Proficiency in Medical Care is within 5 years | Needed to command |
| By early June 2027 | Renew ENG1 | Expires 15 June 2027; needed for the application and to keep sailing |
| April 2027 | Ask the management company for the Master's service company letter; get any outstanding testimonials verified | Masters cannot self-certify |
| From 30 April 2027 | Submit MSF 4201 by email, with GMDSS certificate for synchronisation | Window opens 6 months before expiry; new expiry 31 October 2032 |
| On issue | Send new CoC to MACI for the Cayman endorsement; update the yacht's crew certificate matrix | Endorsement rests on the CoC |
| Autumn 2027 | Revalidate RYA commercial endorsement with 150 days' evidence and a valid medical | Separate RYA cycle; do it while documents are to hand |
The checklist behind it
| Item | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sea service | 12 months in 5 years, or 3 in 6, or 3 supernumerary | MSN 1861 A1 s.3.2 |
| Yacht service | Yachts over 15 m; sea, stand-by, yard | MSN 1861 A1 s.3.3 |
| Refreshers | PST, FPFF, PSCRB, AFF within 5 years | MSN 1861 A1 s.2.2(d) |
| Medical | Valid ENG1 or accepted equivalent | MSN 1861 A1 s.4 |
| ECDIS / HV | Evidence to avoid limitation | MSN 1861 A1 s.6 |
| Fee | £64 / £74 / £84 by delivery | MSF 4201 Rev 11/25 |
| Flag endorsements | Update after new CoC | Flag's own rules |
| Commercial endorsement | 150 days in 5 years, valid medical | RYA |
TIP — Share the list Give your expiry list to the yacht's crew administrator. Most management companies track certificates; your list lets them check theirs.
If it goes wrong
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Refresher lapsed | Book the refresher; you cannot revalidate or lawfully serve in safety roles until done |
| Not enough sea service | Route B or C, the 30-month occupation route, or the yacht shore-based refresher (MSN 1861 A1 s.9.9) |
| CoC already expired | Standard route may still work if you meet the requirements; otherwise MSF 4258 (Lesson 1.3) |
| Testimonials unverified | Submit to PYA or Nautilus now; allow time |
| Foreign flag endorsement pending | Ask the flag for a temporary document; do not sail without it |
CAUTION — Current rules Everything in this course is dated. Before you apply, open the current MSN 1861, MSF 4201 and your flag's latest notice. MSN 1861 Amendment 1 section 2.6 puts the burden on you to meet the requirements in force when you apply.
The habit
Revalidation is not an exam; it is administration. Officers who keep a running sea service log, get testimonials verified on leaving each yacht, and diary every expiry never have a revalidation problem.
