Deck progression
Governing: RYA scheme and MCA yacht CoC rules. Builds on: L1.4. See also: Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, OOW/Master yacht CoCs.
The ladder in outline
The deck career on a large yacht has two layers:
| Layer | Typical certificates | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Small-craft | RYA Powerboat Level 2, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore | Deckhand, lead deckhand, bosun, small-yacht captain |
| STCW yacht CoCs | MCA OOW (Yachts), Chief Mate (Yachts), Master (Yachts) | Officer of the watch, mate, captain |
The Yachtmaster Offshore, commercially endorsed, is the hinge between the two. It is what lets a bosun run a tender operation with authority and is the starting point for the MCA yacht officer route.
Taking the Yachtmaster in South Africa
Several schools in Cape Town and Durban advertise RYA Yachtmaster preparation and exam packages, as well as the commercial endorsement. The appeal is obvious: rand pricing, sailing in demanding water, and exams scheduled around the southern summer when many crew are home.
What you are buying is the RYA's scheme, delivered locally. The certificate is the same one issued in the Solent or Palma. The theory is covered in Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory.
CAUTION - Exam prerequisites are documented, not remembered The examiner checks your sea time evidence. Collect signed testimonials, logbook pages and vessel details as you go, not the week before the exam.
Where the SAMSA ticket fits
There is no conversion of a SAMSA small-vessel skipper certificate into an RYA or MCA certificate. If you hold a SAMSA Category C or B, you still sit the RYA exam on its own terms. The SAMSA ticket helps in three ways:
- your boat handling and pilotage will already be at a decent standard;
- documented SA sea time (charter, dive, delivery, fishing) can support your experience record;
- you can keep earning at home between seasons, which matters when the rand is weak.
Whether a given period on an SA small vessel counts as qualifying sea service for a later MCA yacht CoC depends on how it is evidenced and on the MCA's rules at the time. Keep records as if you will need them.
Planning the STCW courses for the CoC route
When you move towards MCA OOW (Yachts) you will need further STCW courses: survival craft, advanced fire fighting, medical first aid and others. Here MIN 643 matters (see L1.2): for a first UK CoC, the MCA accepts survival craft, AFF and medical courses only from the MCA or an EU/EEA administration. A South African AFF or medical course may be excellent training and still not count for that application.
WARNING - Check before you pay twice Before booking any STCW course beyond basic training in South Africa, ask: which certificate am I aiming for, which administration will issue it, and will it accept this course? Get the answer in writing from the school or the administration.
Which flag, which CoC
Most SA officers on large yachts hold MCA yacht CoCs because the UK system is the industry's reference and many other flags recognise it. Some move to other administrations' certificates later. The alternative, a SAMSA STCW officer CoC endorsed by the UK, is covered in L2.3.
A realistic deck timeline
- Season 1-2: deckhand; PB2, SRC; start the sea-time record.
- Season 2-4: Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed), perhaps taken at home in the southern summer.
- Season 4 onwards: the MCA OOW (Yachts) course and exam route, with STCW courses chosen to satisfy MIN 643.
The numbers of days and courses for each CoC are set by the MCA and are taught in OOW/Master yacht CoCs; they are not repeated here.
