Engineering: the AEC and the yacht engineer route from South Africa

SA-YACHT-M2 · Career tickets and recognition · SA-YACHT-M2-A The deck and engineering ladders South Africans climb, and how SAMSA STCW certificates are recognised by the UK.

Yacht engineers start with the MCA Approved Engine Course, and **South African schools advertise it in Cape Town and Durban**. How to start, and what to do if you already hold SA engineering qualifications.

Engineering entry

Governing: MCA yacht engineer scheme; SAMSA for SA engineer CoCs. Builds on: L1.2, L1.3. See also: MCA engineering (AEC, SV route).

Why engineers are in demand

Every yacht needs engineers, and there are never quite enough good ones. A South African with a mechanical or electrical trade background has a head start: yachts are full of diesel generators, hydraulics, watermakers, air conditioning and electrical systems that reward hands-on skill.

The AEC

The MCA Approved Engine Course (AEC) is the recognised entry ticket for yacht engineering. There are two parts:

Course Role it supports Prerequisite (provider page)
AEC 1 Deck/engineer, junior engineer on smaller yachts None stated
AEC 2 Builds on AEC 1 AEC 1

A South African provider advertises MCA-approved AEC 1 and AEC 2 courses in Durban and Cape Town. That is a provider's own claim, not the MCA register. Before paying, check that the centre is on the MCA's list of approved training providers for that course and that the certificate will be issued in the form the MCA recognises.

The syllabus and the later engineer CoC route (SV and Y certificates) are taught in MCA engineering (AEC, SV route) and are not repeated here.

WARNING - Approval is course-specific A school may be approved for AEC 1 but not for other courses it sells. Check the specific course against the MCA's list.

What your SA background is worth

Trade qualifications. A diesel mechanic, auto-electrician, fitter or refrigeration technician certificate is not a CoC, but it is the most persuasive line on a junior engineer's CV. Put it near the top.

SAMSA STCW engineer CoCs. If you already hold a SAMSA engineering CoC from merchant or fishing service, you may not need to start at AEC 1 at all. South Africa is on the MCA's list of countries accepted towards a UK Flag State Endorsement, covering deck and engineer CoCs (see L2.3). An FSE lets you serve on UK ships in the capacity of your SA CoC; whether that suits a yacht career, or whether converting to an MCA yacht engineer CoC is better, depends on your certificate level and plans.

SA fishing and workboat time. Engine-room time on SA vessels is real experience. Keep discharge records and testimonials.

STCW courses for engineers

The next tier of STCW courses (survival craft, AFF, medical) is subject to the same MIN 643 limits as for deck crew: for a first UK CoC, these must come from the MCA or an EU/EEA administration. Plan them for Europe if an MCA engineer CoC is the goal.

Getting the first job

Engineering roles on the smallest yachts are often combined with deck duties (deck/engineer). With AEC 1, a trade background, basic training and a medical, that is a realistic first job. Mention specific equipment you have worked on: generator makes, watermakers, hydraulic systems.

TIP - Log your hours Keep a simple record of engine-room work: vessel, dates, machinery, tasks. It becomes the evidence for later certificates and makes interviews easy.

CAUTION - Do not buy a ladder of courses up front Take AEC 1, get to sea, and let the job and the chief engineer tell you what comes next.
